Yu Yuan Garden – A Refuge to Unwind In

One of the recognized tourist attractions in Shanghai, Yu Yuan Garden is located at the heart of Shanghai’s Old City. Recognized as one of the region’s finest and most lavish Chinese gardens, it features numerous areas abundant in greenery, ponds, zig-zagging bridges and charming pavilions. Welcoming you with its alluring classical beauty, the garden was created as a private garden by Pu YunDuan, a government officer of the Ming Dynasty.
Throughout the long period of its existence, the charming garden has undergone many changes. For instance, it was severely damaged during the Opium War back in the 19th century. However a restoration project that took five years managed to refurbish its irresistible tranquillity.
Occupying an area of nearly 20,000 square metres, the garden with its innumerable attractions exceeds what is expected from its relatively small size. Distinctive characteristics are evident in almost every feature within its vicinity from cloisters to pavilions. However the scenic garden is comprised of six main areas: Inner Garden, Yuhua Hall, Huijing Hall, Dianchun Hall, Wanhua Chamber and Sansui Hall. Within the borders of each area laid out in the Suzhou style are several scenic spots waiting to dazzle the visitor.
Yuhua Hall also known as Jade Magnificent Hall is elegantly furnished with pieces of rosewood from the Ming Dynasty. The splendid Sansui Hall is housed at the Grand Rockery. This rockery is made of Huangshi stone and features gorges, winding caves, cliffs and peaks. Considered to be the oldest as well as the largest rockery in the Yangtze River’s southern region, the rockery affords an unparalleled bird’s eye view of the garden. It is a haven of serenity amid fragrant flowers and greenery.
As you meander through the Wanhua Chamber and Yule Pavilion, you will come across wondrous streams, courtyards, corridors and pavilions in addition to various enticing natural features. The exquisite and compact Inner Garden with its ornamental ponds and lovely flower walls also adds to the garden’s allure.
