Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre – the rebellion lives on…

Witness one of the most tumultuous periods of China’s history, preserved within a nondescript basement museum that is the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre. Make it a unique stop on your travel itinerary when you park yourself at a central Shanghai hotel such as the Millennium Hongqiao Hotel Shanghai. This elegant rest is an excellent option of a luxury Shanghai city hotel that is guaranteed to please all comers.

Listed in the Lonely Planet and Frommer’s guides but without any sign outside the premises is a neat little enclave of communist cultural art that bills itself as the Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre. It is the brainchild of Yang Pei Ming, an independent collector who started the collection of posters as a hobby and now intends to preserve them for posterity. The posters features are from the period of Chinese history when Chairman Mao held sway, with most posters from the Cultural Revolution. You will find the museum in an apartment building on Huashan Road that faces Wukang Road, within the French Concession area of the city. Although the “museum” comprises only two rooms, it features an extensive collection of rare poster art, and will provide a unique glimpse into one of the country’s most politically charged chapters.
