Nanjing Road – More than just a shopping experience

Nanjing Road is one of the world’s busiest shopping streets and one of the oldest, with its history dating as far back as 1845. Called ‘park lane’ at the time, in the 1930s it was named as one of the world’s seven great roads. Its rich and eventful history along with its modern attractions, make it one of shanghai’s most visited destinations. Stretching 6kms from The Bund east towards Hongqiao, with Shanghai’s centerpoint, People’s square in the middle, it attracts over one million visits a day. Paved with wooden benches, colourful bricks and stones, parterres scatter along the street and decorated with flowers and statues, this street is a comprehensive shopping centre which integrates tourism, business and culture together.

Divided in to two sections by Xizang road to East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road, this street houses more than 600 businesses, ranging from modern shopping malls, famous ancient shops, specialty shops to souvenir shops. The layout of the street is generally elegant in the east section, unique in the middle and busy in the west. In recent years the west end of Nanjing Street has experienced continuous development and an inflow of a few world famous brand names such as Tiffany, Mont Blanc and Dunhill, so as to make it one of the most popular places to buy luxury goods. This area also hosts a few five star hotels, restaurants and prime office buildings.
Unlike the west end that caters to the high-end luxury shopper, Nanjing east road is a little more down market but very popular among shoppers of Shanghai seeking the latest fashions but a little less expensive. It boasts many large shopping malls, some of shanghai’s oldest and largest department stores and traditional eateries with long histories. For those seeking a taste of Chinese art and culture in their shopping list, specialty shops clustered around Huanghe Road and Middle Henan Road will do nicely. This elite part of the street offers China silks, paintings, calligraphy, handicrafts, traditional Chinese medicine and other tourist attractions. It is also advisable to bring along a Chinese friend to do your bargaining and carry lots of cash when coming to shop.

During the early hours of the day the atmosphere of the street resembles that of a park, with all its shops closed and the residents dancing to music and practicing Taichi. The street has its own charm that can capture even those with no shopping plans, especially during the nocturnal hours with its beautifully decorated shops and sparkly lights.
Citadines Jinqiao Shanghai enjoys a prime location in People’s square, the political and cultural centre of the city. Situated just minutes away from Nanjing Street are the Shanghai Serviced Apartments proving it ideal for all shoppers, business and leisure travellers.
