Zhouzhuang – Eastern Venice

The beautiful city of Zhouzhuang is unique in so many different ways. For one it is crisscrossed by plenty of little rivers and lakes making it look almost like a version of Venice in the East. What is even more spectacular about Zhouzhuang is its beautiful age old feel. With most of the buildings from the Qing and Ming Dynasties, you are sure to be transported to a picturesque era, where small boats take you to places and where the ambience echoes tranquility wherever you go.

The city of Zhouzhuang lies right at the center of Shanghai and Suzhou. It is predominantly made of rivers and lakes making it the best waterside town in China. Zhouzhuang has a rich history that goes back to over 900 years. The surrounding, architecture and houses stand proof to this. Well preserved, it is one city that makes you feel as though you have walked back in time. The houses have a unique structure to them. About 100 of them have courtyards and roughly 60 have arched gateways made of carved bricks that give the entrance a grand appearance. The city has lakes on all 4 sides and has a number of beautiful water side lanes with a series of stone bridges. Plenty of restaurants and hotels have been set up here enabling you to enjoy this city to your fullest. But it is at night when you can see Zhouzhuang sparkle with glory. Adorned with glittering lights coupled with its dancing reflection, the city sure does twinkle with magic in the air. For sightseeing the small water lanes and ancient buildings are an attraction in itself, but it is the bridges that Zhouzhuang is more famously known for. The beautiful Twin Bridge and Fuan Bridge are the first on the list of bridges and there are so many others to follow. Don’t miss the intriguing Shen House and Zhang’s house, the Chengxu Taoast Temple and the Milou Tower; all interesting attractions in the city.
