Yuyuan Garden – A Classical Chinese Garden in Shanghai

Steeped in history, Shanghai has a rich cultural heritage and gives visitors a chance to experience the old world charm of the city amidst modern development. Home to picturesque gardens, ancient temples and lively markets, the city offers countless hours of sightseeing fun and adventure. The People’s Square, the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Zoo, The Bund, the Oriental Pearl Tower, Nanjing Road and Yuyuan Market are among the many attractions here. Not to be missed however, is a visit to the famous Yuyuan Garden.

Going back to the Ming Dynasty, the garden is located in the Anren Jie area and gives you a chance to experience the beauty of a traditional Chinese classical garden. Completed in 1577 by a government officer known as Pan Yunduan, this scenic area underwent many changes during its long history before being restored and opened to the public in 1961.

Spanning an area of around 20,000 square metres, Yuyuan Garden is made up of six main areas, namely Dianchun Hall, Wanhua Chamber, the Inner Garden, Huijing Hall, Sansui Hall and Yuhua Hall. As you explore the site you will come across many ponds, cloisters, rockeries and pavilions.

With a height of around 14 metres, the Grand Rockery is one of the oldest of its kind in the region. At the base of the rockery you will find Cuixiu Hall set amidst scenic natural splendour. Those wandering into the Inner Garden will come across such features as ornamental ponds and pavilions which provide the perfect setting in which to unwind.

Make sure you also make time to see the Exquisite Jade Rock which is one of the most significant attractions at the garden. The Ancient Performance Stage, the Wall of Cloud Piercing Dragon, the Moon Appreciating Pavilion and the Spring Transforming Hall are among the other sites of interest here worth visiting.
