Shanghai Art Museum – To Admire the Grandeur of the Olden Days

The Shanghai Art Museum was an old museum located in the city of Shanghai in China. The museum is now called the China Art Museum after the rebranding that took place in the month of October, 2012. The museum holds a rich history, formerly being the building that housed the clubhouse of the Shanghai race course.

Located on the west of People’s Park and north of People’s Square, the Shanghai Art Museum was the original home of the Shanghai Biennale which is considered to be one of the most prominent cultural events of Shanghai, while also being the most established biennale in China which includes talks, lectures, and installations along with the main museum show.  The Biennale which began in the year 1996 in the Shanghai Art Museum has been moved to the new Power Station of Art in the year 2012.

Spreading its rich grandeur on a landscape that covers an area of 2200 square meters, the great, majestic building of the Shanghai Art Museum was constructed in the year 1933 as the clubhouse of the Shanghai Race Club race course, the grandstand of which was believed to be the largest in the world at the time. Entertaining masses during the peak of the horse race course industry in the country, the Race Club of the complex was rich with the glory of marble staircases, oak parquet floors and teak paneled rooms, making this indeed a sight to behold. It is undoubtedly acknowledged that this Race Club was the most luxurious and extravagant club of its kind in the world.

The underground tunnels that were built by the Communists in the 1940’s which are still in existence add to the allurement of the Shanghai Art Museum while the clock tower that had a reputation for displaying the wrong time heightens the appeal of this place, making it a must visit location indeed, when in Shanghai.
