Jin Mao Tower – Scale Shanghai’s Dizzying Heights

The Jin Mao Tower is an 88 storey tall skyscraper located in Shanghai’s Lujiazui area. It was the tallest building in the People’s Republic of China until 2007, when it forfeited that claim to the Shanghai World Financial Centre, which is located just next to it. The name Jin Mao comes from traditional Chinese and literally means “Golden Prosperity”. The tower is one of the most prominent features of the city skyline. Construction on the building started in 1994, and was completed 5 years later, in 1999. From the ground to the roof, the building measures 370 metres in height, but that number goes up to 421 metres with the addition of the antenna spire. The building is a blend of traditional Chinese architecture and more modern styles.

Much of the building serves as office space for various companies. The Jin Mao Tower also houses a hotel, a shopping mall, a vast food court and even a nightclub. The 88th floor, which is the highest floor, is an observation deck and is open to the general public. The observation deck can hold up to a 1000 people at a time. The viewing floor is open between 8.30 am and 10 pm daily, and there is a small entry fee. However, the awe inspiring panoramic view of the city from the top of the tower is well worth the price of admission.
