Explore Shanghai from the Oriental Pearl Tower – Discover China’s Cultural Heartland from its Best Observation Deck

Towering above the surrounding landscape at a height of 468m it is easy to understand why the Oriental Pearl Tower or The Oriental Pearl Radio & TV Tower as it is locally known is more than your average observation deck. As the first point of attraction tourists based in a service apartment in Shanghai, the likes of Somerset Xu Hui Shanghai or any other hotels and resorts in the area explore, the observation point was also the tallest building in China till 2007. Ideally situated in Lujiazui the Oriental Pearl Tower occupies the banks of the Huangpu River and is just across the river from The Bund.

Built in the early 90’s the structure was designed by Lin Benlin and his associates Zhang Xiulin and Jiang Huan Chen. Upon completion in 1994, the Oriental Pearl Tower was named the highest structure in the Chinese Republic and remained so for nearly 13 years. As a functioning radio and TV network tower the locale has also served as the venue for many international and national events including the Chinese Live Earth showcase in 2007.

Perhaps best known for the Chinese identity of its design elements another unique feature of the Oriental Pearl Tower is its fifteen observation decks. The tallest of the observation levels is dubbed the Space Module and offers visitors spectacular views from 350m while those with a fear of heights can witness equally captivating sights from the Sightseeing Floor and Space City which are positioned at 263m and 90m respectively. Those who venture up to the highest observation point however will be able to take in the panoramic views from the outdoor viewing area where floors are made of 1.5inch thick glass. Home to a number of exhibition facilities and a retail centre, the Oriental Pearl Tower’s piercing antenna which is responsible for transmitting countless TV and radio station broadcasts is also visible for miles around.
